Unfortunately, this trend has led to a lot of very "busy" websites that overuse Flash technology to hide their deficiencies. We highlight three reasons why you should be cautious before asking your web developer to utilize Flash.

1) Poor user experience:
Flash technology slows down the user experience. People utilize the Internet because they want accurate information quickly. Forcing your clients to wait for Flash introductions or pages to load is the equivalent to making your customers stand in long lines because you don't have more cashiers. Clients are more concerned with your website's content than how much you may have paid your Flash programmer.

2) Flash creates a co-dependent relationship:
Many programmers like Flash programming because it creates a co-dependent relationship between you and your programmer. While Flash files are uploaded to a website, the source files are still stored on the programmer's computer. If you no longer want to use your programmer or if the company goes out of business, you may be forced to develop an entirely new website because the Flash files for your business can only be manipulated by the original programmer.

3) Flash impairs search engine optimization:
HTML is the standard language for website programming. Google, Yahoo, and other search engines utilize this standard programming language to find your company on the web. If your site relies on Flash technology, search engines may overlook your company because they do not "recognize" the Flash programming thus rendering your website invisible to any searching clients.

Appropriate Uses for Flash:
  • Your product is geared towards children or the entertainment industry
  • To illustrate key points, rather than highlight the entire website
  • For interactive demonstrations or games
